Colgate University - Visual Resources CuratorDivision/Department: Art & Art HistoryExpected Date of Hire: As soon as possible Skill band/classification: Salaried Essential Functions: Oversee the operation of the 90,000+ slide collection and the IRIS database of the Colgate Art and Art History department. The constituency served by this facility consists of professors of studio art and art history as well as those from the university at large. Consult with faculty to plan and implement the transition from analog to digital teaching; research and implement a digital asset management system; establish technical, metadata, and archival protocols; maintain analog collections and archival image resources; assist faculty in the use of image databases including ARTstor. Responsible for budget, circulation oversight, acquisition and cataloguing of images, and for maintaining departmental study pages. Hire, train and supervise one part-time employee and several student assistants. Qualifications:(Education and Experience) A broad knowledge of art history as well as an MLS or MLIS degree are required, or a combination of relevant education and digital resource management experience. Extensive knowledge of analog and digital resource management standards and best practices (specifically scanning, metadata, archiving, access, software, and copyright laws), proven experience with graphic software (PhotoShop) and hardware (slide scanner, flatbed scanner, copystand, and film and digital cameras), and fluency with the Microsoft Office Suite and FileMaker Pro are expected. Knowledge of a foreign language and previous college or university experience are desirable. Strong visual discrimination skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate effectively and collegially with a diverse clientele in a challenging and fast-paced environment are essential.
