Head – Department of Prints, Photographs and Architectural Collections
The New-York Historical SocietyThe Head of the Department of Prints, Photographs, and Architectural Collections will be responsible for maintaining and providing access to a large and distinguished collection of visual materials comprising photographs, architectural drawings, prints, and advertising ephemera. Managing the Print Room and overseeing the acquisition and development of the collections, as well as the interpretation of materials to scholars, students, professionals and the general public, the Division Head will supervise a growing staff of professionals and non-professionals, including interns and volunteers. He/she will work closely with the Library Director and other members of the Library staff to plan, develop, and manage special projects involving Print Room collections. Other responsibilities will include exhibition planning, supervising the reference activities, working with donors, and interpreting the collections to users. In addition to participating in Library activities, the Head will regularly collaborate with members of the Museum staff on various assignments and with other departments of the New-York Historical Society including Rights and Reproductions, and Education.
Qualifications include an ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library and Information Studies, with appropriate specialization. An advanced degree in a relevant subject area or equivalent is required, along with solid knowledge of the history of prints and printmaking, the history of photography, and the fundamentals of architectural research methods. Other requirements include at least five years experience in a special collections environment, supervisory experience and a proven history of management and organizational accomplishment. In addition, the candidate will have knowledge of current reference, preservation, and cataloging practices. The successful candidate will be flexible, with problem-solving and communication skills, and able to function in a frequently demanding environment.
Salary: $45,000 - $55,000, commensurate with experience
