A group of German art and museum librarians participated in the April tour of New York, New Haven and Washington, D.C. Evaluation of survey results, emails with hosting institutions, and personal messages sent to hosts by several German participants indicate that the tour provided a great opportunity for learning and professional development for both Germans and Americans. Evelin Morgenstern, the German coordinator of the trip, in a thank-you note writes, "I am writing to you, on behalf of the entire group, to thank you and the ARLIS International Relations Committee for the huge amount of time and effort you devoted to the conception and organization of such an exciting and impressive Study Tour to New York, New Haven and Washington. In a word, the program was just fabulous: the itinerary was beautifully planned and executed, with a good balance between work and fun. If it were to be repeated, I would not change one single detail." Andrea Joosten, from Hamburg wrote, "In the two weeks of our study tour, I learned more than in ten years during my work in Hamburg. It was very interesting to see that our problems seem to be alike. That was different when I was in California 20 years ago. It seems to me that the world moved closer together. So we have to move closer too. The study tour was a good step forward towards that. You presented us a firework full of very nice people, wonderful places, good libraries, interesting museums. It was so good to stay with a colleague than being in a hotel. It made me feeling quickly at home in your city. New York was exciting, lively and full of very nice and helpful people - that made our tour so special. You made our tour so special and again thank you very much for all of this. Greetings and a big thanks to your colleagues as well." Photographs taken by Andrea Joosten in New York and Washington, D.C., and photographs from the farewell dinner illustrate how much everyone enjoyed the trip and include highlights of the tour. A high bar has been set for future study tours. The International Relations Committee thanks everyone involved including members who opened their homes to our colleagues, all the hosting institutions, and all involved in putting together a very successful program. Top of Page 4 April 2012: ARLIS/NA Executive Board Endorses ARL and VRA Fair Use Documents On March 15, 2012, the Art Libraries Society of North America (ARLIS/NA) executive board endorsed two landmark documents on fair use. The Association of Research Libraries' Code of Best Practices in Fair Use for Academic and Research Libraries (January 2012) was prepared in conjunction with the Center for Social Media and the Washington College of Law at American University, and supported by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The code considers existing laws to provide guidance on issues concerning the digitization of copyrighted material--including video--for student use, the extent to which special collections can be digitized and made available online, and the archiving of websites for future research. The principle of fair use is examined and affirmed with regard to mission-centered library services as described on the association's website: The Intellectual Property Rights Committee of the Visual Resources Association (VRA) prepared a Statement on the Fair Use of Images for Teaching, Research and Study that offers similar guidance on fair use as it applies specifically to images by describing six categories of use, as described on the Center for Social Media's website: The ARLIS/NA Public Policy Committee recommended endorsement of these documents as means of empowering educational and cultural institutions to apply long-standing principles of fair use in fulfillment of their missions, and to inform the scholarly community about the full extent of their rights under current copyright law. 3 April 2012: 2011 Wittenborn Award Announced at Annual Conference The 32nd annual George Wittenborn Memorial Book Award was presented at the ARLIS/NA annual conference. Windows on the War: Soviet Tass Posters at Home and Abroad 1941-1945 won the award. Read the press release for information about the award. Top of Page 16 March 2012: ARLIS/NA Executive Board Endorses Statement on Anti-Piracy Legislation The ARLIS/NA executive board has endorsed a statement prepared by the Public Policy Committee in response to proposed US legislation intended to prevent piracy of intellectual property: The Art Libraries Society of North America (ARLIS/NA) urges the US Congress to craft legislation that strikes a balance between combating copyright infringement and intellectual property theft and preserving the open flow of information through electronic means. Proposed legislation such as the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA, H.R. 3261) and the Protect Intellectual Property Act (PIPA, S. 968) is intended to prevent foreign websites from making counterfeit and pirated content available, but as written, the laws would allow the US Department of Justice to compel US-based Internet service providers, credit card companies, and advertisers to cut ties with suspected Web sites before confirmation of infringement or theft, thus potentially restricting access to legitimate sources. The legislation would adversely affect internet service providers who would bear the economic burden of prosecution from copyright holders and suffer curtailment of revenue sources and provide greater incentive for Internet service providers to increase surveillance of users' online activity, a potential violation of privacy. Existing legislation, including the Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998, already provides the legal authority to remove specific instances of pirated content from a Web site; the proposed laws would penalize legitimate sites that may have inadvertently carried links to pirated material. ARLIS/NA joins the American Library Association and the Association of Law Librarians in support of legislation such as the Online Protection and Enforcement of Digital Trade (OPEN) Act (H.R. 3782 and S. 2029) that expands the power of the International Trade Commission's authority to enforce copyright and trademark violations without jeopardizing privacy and first amendment rights to free speech. More information is available on the American Library Association Washington Office website in the PIPA, SOPA, and the OPEN Act Quick Reference Guide and on the Legislative Action Center website page of the American Association of Law Libraries website. 18 January 2012: Art Museum Libraries and Librarianship in Third Printing Art Museum Libraries and Librarianship, co-published by ARLIS/NA and Scarecrow Press, is now in its third printing. The book, edited by Joan M. Benedetti and with a preface by Michael Brand, and an introduction by Ann B. Abid, has been adopted as a text by several library schools that offer courses in art librarianship and/or museum studies. (1/18/12) 13 December 2011: Visual Resources Assocation Releases Statement on the Fair Use of Images for Teaching, Research, and Study The Visual Resources Association, the international organization of image media professionals dedicated to furthering research and education in the field of image management, has released a "Statement on the Fair Use of Images for Teaching, Research, and Study". The statement describes six uses of copyrighted still images that the VRA believes fall within the U.S. doctrine of fair use. The six uses are: 1) preservation (storing images for repeated use in a teaching context and transferring images to new formats); 2) use of images for teaching purposes; 3) use of images (both large, high-resolution images and thumbnails) on course websites and in other online study materials; 4) adaptations of images for teaching and classroom work by students; 5) sharing images among educational and cultural institutions to facilitate teaching and study; and 6) reproduction of images in theses and dissertations. The statment draws from the academic community's longstanding practice of relying on fair use for teaching and learning, and highlights one area--the use of images in theses and dissertations--where the Association believes the community should return to its previous practices of being more assertive. The statement also relies heavily on recent fair use jurisprudence and aims to provide image users within the educational and cultural heritage communities with greater certainty when relying on fair use. The statement was developed by the VRA's Intellectual Property Rights Committee, with the guidance of a Legal Advisory Committee of preeminent copyright scholars and legal experts, whose members include: Robert W. Clarida (Cowan, Liebowitz & Latman), Jeffrey P. Cunard (Debevoise & Plimpton LLP), Jackie Ewenstein (Ewenstein & Young LLP), Georgia K. Harper (scholarly communications advisor, The University Libraries, University of Texas at Austin), Virginia Rutledge (PIPE Arts Group) and Jule Sigall (associate general counsel - Copyright, Microsoft; formerly associate register for policy & international affairs, U.S. Copyright Office). Top of Page 5 December 2011: 2011-2012 Intership Award Recipient Selected Lindsey Reynolds is the recipient of the ARLIS/NA 2012-2012 Internship Award. This prestigious award grants $2,500 to support a period of internship for a student preparing for a career in art librarianship or visual resources curatorship. In addition to the $2,500 stipend, Ms. Reynolds will receive a one-year complimentary membership in ARLIS/NA. Lindsey Reynolds is currently a student in the Master of Library and Information Studies degree program at the University of Alabama. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in art from the University of Georgia. Ms. Reynolds has experience working in a variety of library settings including museums, public libraries, academic libraries, and archives and special collections. The analysis gives insight into the needs of current and potential users of the VRA Core. The survey was conducted from February 1, 2010 to March 5, 2010, by the VRA Core Survey Committee as part of the continuing work of the Visual Resource Association's (VRA) Data Standards Committee (DSC). The purpose of the survey was to learn about both the Core's current and potential users. Current users were asked which version of the Core they use, and if that version was Core 4.0, they were asked to indicate their experiences and challenges with implementation. Potential users were asked to describe barriers in their adoption of Core 4.0. As a result of survey feedback, a VRA Core Implementation Registry has been established. The registry provides an opportunity for current and potential users to view publicly available implementations of the standard. If you would like to add your collection to the registry please contact Trish Rose-Sandler. 31 August 2011: Executive Board Accepts ARLIS/NA 2011-2015 Strategic Plan Over the summer the ARLIS/NA executive board accepted the 2011-2015 ARLIS/NA Strategic Plan which has been in the making for well over a year. The plan will shape the future direction of the society as it carries out its mission to foster excellence in art and design librarianship and image management in the years ahead. The ARLIS/NA president and executive board expressed deep appreciation of the Strategic Planning Committee for producing a well articulated and well structured plan. The members of that committee are: Pat Barnett (chair), Hannah Bennett, Jennifer Garland, Eumie Imm-Stroukoff, Barbara Rockenbach, Jamie Vander Broek (formerly Lausch), and Eric Wolf. The majority of the committee is pressing ahead with the vital second phase of the plan--the action plan component--that will provide more explicit direction, not only for the board, but also for the committees, divisions, sections, chapters, liaisons, and special interest groups within our society. ARLIS/NA members are encouraged to take a moment to review the plan and think about how they might resolve to help ARLIS/NA achieve one or more of its goals. Contact President Jon Evans or another member of the executive board if you care to discuss your ideas. Top of Page 24 August 2011: 2012 SEI Implementation Team Announced The ARLIS/NA executive board has announced the Summer Educational Institute for Visual Resources and Image Management (SEI) Implementation Team for 2012. Under the direction of the executive boards of ARLIS/NA and the Visual Resources Association Foundation (VRAF), the Implementation Team (IT) is charged as the management group for SEI to provide or coordinate administration, local arrangements, registration, scheduling, fundraising, publicity, curriculum, instruction and teaching materials. The SEI Implementation Team is as follows: Co-chairs: Elizabeth Schaub (The University of Texas at Austin) and Betha Whitlow (Washington University in St. Louis) Faculty Liaison (incoming ARLIS/NA appointed co-chair): Amy Trendler (Ball State University) ARLIS/NA Curriculum Specialist: Sarah Falls (New York School of Interior Design) Development: Liz Gushee (The University of Texas at Austin) Local Planning Chair: Rebecca Price (University of Michigan) Treasurer: Rebecca Moss (University of Minnesota) VRA Curriculum Specialist: Beth Wodnick (Princeton University) Webmaster: Christine Hilker (University of Arkansas) ARLIS/NA Board Liaison: Sarah Carter (Ringling College of Art and Design) VRAF Board Liaison: Rebecca Moss (University of Minnesota) ARLIS/NA Endorses Statement on Copyright Reform The ARLIS/NA executive board has endorsed the statement on copyright reform issued on May 16 by the Library Copyright Alliance, whose members include the American Library Association, the Association of Research Libraries, and the Association of College and Research Libraries. The statement describes the key features that copyright reform proposals should include in order to constitute significant improvement over current law for libraries and their users. It addresses issues concerning orphan works, mass digitization projects, and modernization of Section 108 of the U.S. Copyright Act in the wake of the Google Books settlement rejection by Judge Denny Chin of the Southern District of New York. ARLIS/NA joins other library organizations that advocate for reasonable copyright policy in the courts as well as in the U.S. Congress. Library activities already benefit from broad, flexible protection under the fair use doctrine and related provisions in current law, but technological advances in the means for storage and transmission have also brought new means of limiting access to copyrighted materials. We continue to support a balanced approach that preserves the intellectual property rights of creators and allows reasonable, non-exploitative access to works of scholarship and art. 13 June 2011: Deborah Kempe Wins Kress Travel Award The ARLIS/NA International Relations Committee and the Awards Committee has announced that Deborah Kempe has been awarded the Kress Travel Award. The committee is developing a strategic plan that will move ARLIS/NA in a strong new direction relevant for 2011-15 and values member input in that process. The Committee has worked hard over the past month to move the planning process forward. They have reviewed and edited the six preliminary goals and objectives already circulated to the membership, and have completed the design of a short survey that will give every ARLIS member an opportunity to review, comment on, and expand the preliminary goals. The survey should take no more than ten to fifteen minutes to complete. Your responses are needed to improve on the goals and will form the basis of an Action Plan that will allow the society to achieve these goals. The committee hopes that the strategic goals capture and reflect the most important aspects of members' daily work, as well as their professional development, and their impact on the development of the Society in the critical years ahead. 18 January 2011: Samuel H. Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution G. Wayne Clough ordered its removal on November 30 in response to outside pressure and the implied threat of funding cutbacks by several members of Congress. As an organization of museum, academic, and public library professionals dedicated to the enhancement of information access for research in the visual arts, ARLIS/NA wholeheartedly supports freedom of expression and scholarly inquiry as essential to understanding and preserving our cultural heritage. We recognize and commend the Federal Government's long-standing support of endeavors that have produced research of lasting value despite the possibility of controversy or disagreement. This exhibition, organized by David C. Ward, an art historian at the National Portrait Gallery, and Jonathan Katz, director of the Visual Studies Doctoral Program at the University at Buffalo, State University of New York, is a landmark examination of a topic seldom treated in a major museum, and it deserves to be presented without prejudice as devised by the curators and approved by the Smithsonian Institution. ARLIS/NA strongly encourages all members in the United States to inform their senators and representatives that they support the exhibition, its curators, and the National Portrait Gallery." The P.P.O.W Gallery and The Estate of David Wojnarowicz has issued a statement regarding the removal of the work from the exhibition. 6 December 2010: ARLIS/NA 2010-11 Internship Award Recipient Announced The ARLIS/NA Internship Award Subcommittee has announced Bailey Diers as the 2010-11 Internship Award recipient. Mark Pompelia, visual resources librarian at Rhode Island School of Design, proposed the SIG and will serve as the group's representative. Mark's proposal to the board stated, "These entities vary from institution--sometimes called labs, centers, libraries, collections, etc.--but they share a common interest in acquiring, presenting, and educating users on the properties and creative possibilities of physical materials in the areas of architecture, design, and all the fine arts that are the purview of an association such as ARLIS/NA." A Materials Special Interest Group web page will be added to the ARLIS/NA website in the near future. 5 October 2010: Avery Architectural & Fine Arts Library and ARTstor awarded IMLS National Leadership Grant The Avery Architectural & Fine Arts Library at Columbia University and ARTstor have been awarded a $974,998 three-year National Leadership grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). The funds will be used to support the new Built Works Registry (BWR), a collaborative project to develop a freely available registry and data resource for architectural works and the built environment. The project will include development of the BWR policy framework, metadata structure, technical infrastructure, and a body of seed content. The Avery Architectural & Fine Arts Library at Columbia University and ARTstor will be the principal collaborators for this project. The Getty Research Institute (GRI), nine other institutions, and an international advisory council will also participate throughout the three-year project development cycle. BWR will be available for contributions and use by scholars, catalogers, and other users across all types of academic and cultural heritage organizations, both in the United States and worldwide. "Artist Files Revealed: Documentation and Access"--NEW Maintenance Guidelines ADDED This important Online Publication now includes an additional chapter, written by Anne Simmons and Linda Psomas, devoted to maintenance recommendations. The new recommendations cover all the essential practicalities of creating and maintaining an artist files collection: classification of the files, assigning locations, physically creating the files, labeling, housing, and filing and circulation. The new chapter on maintenance recommendations joins MARC cataloging recommendations to represent indispensible documentation needed to create and provide access to an artist file collection. In conjunction with the Artist Files Revealed Online Directory, this publication provides vital and authoritative guidance for creating and making available an artist file collection. The complete Online Publication provides much-needed documentation that helps the art librarian catalog, arrange, and provide local, national, and international access to artist files collections. Included are general guidelines for creating MARC records representing artist files, and an abundance of additional information that includes links to online collections, conference papers, professional societies and much more. Top of Page 21 September 2010: New Online Publication: Cataloging Exhibition Publications: Best Practices: Name and Title Access Points This new Online Publication, written and compiled by Lynda Bunting, Sherman Clarke, Marly Helm, Elizabeth Lilker, Elizabeth O'Keefe, Sarah Quimby, and Daniel Starr, provides invaluable recommendations for creating name and title access points when cataloging exhibition catalogs. It illuminates all the particular issues and challenges associated with these main and added entries. How are exhibition venues traced? Who is the main entry--artist or author? Thorny questions such as these are answered concisely and with real-world examples. The cataloging of exhibition publications poses unique challenges to new and experienced catalogers alike. These types of publications often require more use of a cataloger's judgment, and more intervention in terms of transposing, omitting, and supplying data. Decision-making about the choice of a primary access point can be quite involved, and local practices and guidelines greatly affect how an exhibition publication is cataloged. This latest section of best practice guidelines (Name and Title Access Points) is offered to users completely free of charge. The entire series of best practice guidelines for cataloguing exhibition catalogues (Title and Statement of Responsibility; Notes; Subject headings; and Name and Title Access Points) are available from the Online Publications section of the ARLIS/NA website. 10 August 2010: ARLIS/NA Endorses RLG Guidelines for Providing Online Access to Digitized Versions of Unpublished Materials The ARLIS/NA executive board recently accepted a Public Policy Committee recommendation to endorse OCLC's "Well-intentioned practice for putting digitized collections of unpublished materials online." The guidelines seek to restore balance in rights management by promoting a practical approach to identifying and resolving rights issues in a manner consistent with ethical and professional standards. ARLIS/NA joins the Joint National Committee on Archives, Libraries and Museums (CALM) and the Rare Books and Manuscripts Section (RBMS) of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL), a division of the American Library Association (ALA) as well as more than two dozen individuals from the academic and museum library community in supporting this approach. Top of Page 14 June 2010: "The Future of Art Bibliography in the 21st Century" "The Future of Art Bibliography in the 21st Century" meetings were convened in New York City, April 20-21, by the Getty Research Institute. The Getty received a grant from the Kress Foundation to convene an international task force of art librarians, art historians, and information specialists to discuss the future of art bibliography in the 21st century. The goal of the meetings was to review current practices, take stock of changes, and seriously consider developing more sustainable and collaborative ways of supporting the bibliography of art history in the future. For additional information, read the report of the meetings. Dane plans to mark his retirement by delivering the John Cotton Dana Distinguished Lecture on Wednesday, December 9, at 6 p.m. in the Main Library's Centennial Hall. Dane began his career at the library in 1947, after serving in the Second World War. Under Dane's stewardship, the library's Special Collections Division has thrived, and today boasts of more than 23,000 fine prints and photographs, 5,000 posters, and 1,000 rare books. The collection includes works by Rembrandt, Warhol, Lichtenstein, Kandinsky, Picasso, Matisse and Miro. Dane expanded the collections by including unique artists' books, commercially produced pop-up books, and even shopping bags. Dane has curated more than 300 exhibitions at the library, including such major displays as "A Salute to the Society of American Graphic Arts: 1915-1994," "Hidden Treasures of Japanese Art," and "The World in Prints." He is a board member of the Victorian Society in America, sits on the advisory board of the Printmaking Council of New Jersey, and is a member of the Grolier Club, as well as the Art Libraries Society of North America. Dane is also listed in Who's Who in American Art. Dane said he plans to spend his retirement traveling and visiting museums and galleries. His first stop will be Puerto Rico in February where he has vacationed annually for the last 50 years. For additional information, see the Newark Public Library press release. Top of Page 30 November 2009: The Transitions Motivated by the unfortunately-growing number of ARLIS/NA and Visual Resources Association (VRA) members who recently have been either laid off or forced into retirement because of current harsh economic times, Maureen Burns, Leigh Gates, and Margaret Webster have established both a Google Group and a related LinkedIn Group named "The Transitions" to provide a forum for visual resource or art library professionals who, for whatever reason, are in transition in their careers. The Google Group will provide a private environment while the contents of the LinkedIn Group will be publicly visible to anyone who wishes to access it. The hope is that these sites will be used to discuss issues of concern, share experiences, post documents of interest, keep in touch with professional colleagues, and to gain access to relevant resources. It is anticipated that these groups will develop organically and take shape in ways which will provide practical career management information and emotional support to those who choose to join. Initially posted on the Google Group site is an Online Resources page where useful links are listed for job searching, volunteer opportunities, and networking. Also posted are some professional opportunities which had not appeared on ARLIS_L or VRA_L and an ongoing discussion of what make an effective curriculum vitae or resume. Both the ARLIS/NA and VRA executive boards have agreed to support these efforts, and a web presence and an open invitation to join should appear soon on their respective web sites. After the initial invitation to members of both organizations was made in early August, over 20 people joined The Transitions. These members included those who have retired, been laid off, or are actively searching for professional or volunteer positions. It is hoped that participation in these groups will encourage those who, for whatever reason, are going through a career transition to remain active and vital within their profession. As a group member one will be able to engage in discussions, add and edit documents, invite new members, and connect with colleagues. In order to preserve membership privacy, it is asked that anyone interested in joining the Google Group inquire directly to Maureen Burns, Leigh Gates, or Margaret Webster. It is hoped that ARLIS/NA and VRA members will spread the word to both former and current colleagues who might benefit from participation. 29 October 2009: ARLIS/NA-VRAF SEI PRO 2010 ARLIS/NA and the Visual Resources Association Foundation (VRAF) announce SEI Pro 2010: ARLIS/NA-VRAF Summer Educational Institute for Visual Resources and Image Management. This publication of best practices, created by the ARLIS/NA Cataloging Advisory Committee is devoted to providing practical guidance to catalogers working with art exhibition publications. These guidelines are intended to be used in conjunction with other cataloging documentation, including Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules 2nd edition, 2002 revision (AACR2), and its successor, Resource Description and Access (RDA), Library of Congress Rule Interpretations (LCRI), and MARC21. This new online publication is the third devoted to providing best practice guidelines for cataloging exhibition catalogs. The first two in the series are: Title and Statement of Responsibility Note Fields Top of Page 29 July 2009: 2008 ARLIS/NA Research Awards The following ARLIS/NA Research Awards were announced at the 37th annual conference in Indianapolis, Indiana, in May 2009.
