ARLIS/NA Endorses RLG Guidelines for Providing Online Access to Digitized Versions of Unpublished Materials

The ARLIS/NA executive board recently accepted a Public Policy Committee recommendation to endorse OCLC's "Well-intentioned practice for putting digitized collections of unpublished materials online."

The guidelines seek to restore balance in rights management by promoting a practical approach to identifying and resolving rights issues in a manner consistent with ethical and professional standards.

ARLIS/NA joins the Joint National Committee on Archives, Libraries and Museums (CALM) and the Rare Books and Manuscripts Section (RBMS) of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL), a division of the American Library Association (ALA) as well as more than two dozen individuals from the academic and museum library community in supporting this approach. "The Future of Art Bibliography in the 21st Century"

"The Future of Art Bibliography in the 21st Century" meetings were convened in New York City, April 20-21, by the Getty Research Institute. The Getty received a grant from the Kress Foundation to convene an international task force of art librarians, art historians, and information specialists to discuss the future of art bibliography in the 21st century. The goal of the meetings was to review current practices, take stock of changes, and seriously consider developing more sustainable and collaborative ways of supporting the bibliography of art history in the future. For additional information, read the report of the meetings. (6/14/10)

Jeff Gunderson Receives Worldwide Books Award for Publications

The 2009/2010 Worldwide Books Award for Publications has been awarded to Jeff Gunderson, librarian and archivist at the Anne Bremer Memorial Library, San Francisco Art Institute, for his essay, "A Combination of Accidents: The San Francisco Art Scene in the 1940s." This essay is included in the exhibition catalog, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art: 75 Years of Looking Forward. The exhibition will be up until January 2011. Gunderson's essay tells of the relationship between the California School of Fine Arts (now the San Francisco Art Institute) and the San Francisco Museum of Art (now the San Fransisco Museum of Modern Art) and their two dynamic directors, Douglas MacAgy and Grace McCann Morley. Both directors were instrumental in promoting avant-garde, abstract-expressionist, and modern art ideas in conjunction with a host of vibrant artists and faculty members that included David Park, Clyfford Still, Mark Rothko, Ansel Adams, Minor White, Adaline Kent, Edward Weston, Marcel Duchamp, and Clay Spohn.

Jeff Gunderson has worked at the Anne Bremer Memorial Library since 1981 and has been library director since 1983. He is currently working on a collection of essays about swimming. (6/14/10)

Two New Online Resources Illuminate the Path for Artist Files

The Communications and Publications Committee announces the availability of two new online resources: Artist Files Revealed: Online Directory and Artist Files Revealed: Documentation and Access

These pioneering web-based resources represent a giant step forward in providing access to one of the most important "hidden" collections in art libraries, the artist files. The online directory is an interactive resource of institutional holdings of artist files that allows for efficient browsing of collection statements and provides links to further artist files resources. The documentation and access resource provides much-needed documentation that helps the art librarian catalog, arrange, and provide local, national, and international access to artist files collections. Sue Maberry Collaborates on "Pacific Standard Time" Exhibition at OTIS

Sue Maberry, director of the library and instructional technology at Otis College of Art and Design has been collaborating with Meg Linton, gallery director at OTIS to organize an exhibition about the Los Angeles Woman's Building which will open in Fall 2011. OTIS received an Exhibition Planning Grant from Getty to plan the exhibition for the Getty initiative "Pacific Standard Time: Art in L.A. 1945-1980." As part of the research phase, Sue and Meg recently spent three days in Washington, DC, doing research at the Smithsonian Archives of American Art for the exhibition. After DC, they traveled to Clarksville, Tennessee, to interview Cynthia Marsh, an artist/designer extensively involved in the Woman's Building and a previous chair of the Otis Communication Arts Department. Sheila de Bretteville, the founding chair of Communication Arts at Otis, was one of the founders of the Woman's Building and her work will also be featured in the exhibition.

Several video interviews with artists involved are being produced now and will appear soon on the Woman's Building Playlist at Otis YouTube Channel.

The Getty Foundation awarded Otis a new grant (in addition to its initial research and planning grant) for the exhibition and publication of "Doin' It in Public: Feminism and Art at the Woman's Building" set to open at the Ben Maltz Gallery on October 1, 2011 as part of the "Pacific Standard Time: Art in L.A. 1945-1980" project. ARTstor Announces Travel Award Program

The ARTstor Travel Awards program will provide five research travel awards in the amount of $1,500 each to support educational and scholarly activities. The awards have been established to recognize the importance of engaging with original works and sites, conducting onsite research in archives that hold primary source material, or attending conferences with colleagues engaged with similar issues. ARTstor will provide five research travel awards in the amount of $1,500 each (to be used by September 1, 2011) to help support the educational and scholarly activities of graduate students, scholars, curators, educators, and librarians in any field in the arts, architecture, humanities, and social sciences.

To be considered for a research travel award, applicants must create and submit an ARTstor image group (or a series of image groups) and a single accompanying essay that creatively and compellingly demonstrates why the image group(s) is useful for teaching, research, or scholarship. The five winning submissions will be determined by ARTstor staff. These submissions will help ARTstor to understand better the uses that scholars and teachers are making of ARTstor's content and tools, and will provide us with insights into how we can continue to improve our efforts to serve the educational community. The Transitions

Motivated by the unfortunately-growing number of ARLIS/NA and Visual Resources Association (VRA) members who recently have been either laid off or forced into retirement because of current harsh economic times, Maureen Burns, Leigh Gates, and Margaret Webster have established both a Google Group and a related LinkedIn Group named "The Transitions" to provide a forum for visual resource or art library professionals who, for whatever reason, are in transition in their careers. The Google Group will provide a private environment while the contents of the LinkedIn Group will be publicly visible to anyone who wishes to access it. The hope is that these sites will be used to discuss issues of concern, share experiences, post documents of interest, keep in touch with professional colleagues, and to gain access to relevant resources. It is anticipated that these groups will develop organically and take shape in ways which will provide practical career management information and emotional support to those who choose to join.

Initially posted on the Google Group site is an Online Resources page where useful links are listed for job searching, volunteer opportunities, and networking. Also posted are some professional opportunities which had not appeared on ARLIS_L or VRA_L and an ongoing discussion of what make an effective curriculum vitae or resume.

Both the ARLIS/NA and VRA executive boards have agreed to support these efforts, and a web presence and an open invitation to join should appear soon on their respective web sites. After the initial invitation to members of both organizations was made in early August, over 20 people joined The Transitions. These members included those who have retired, been laid off, or are actively searching for professional or volunteer positions. It is hoped that participation in these groups will encourage those who, for whatever reason, are going through a career transition to remain active and vital within their profession. As a group member one will be able to engage in discussions, add and edit documents, invite new members, and connect with colleagues.

In order to preserve membership privacy, it is asked that anyone interested in joining the Google Group inquire directly to Maureen Burns, Leigh Gates, or Margaret Webster. It is hoped that ARLIS/NA and VRA members will spread the word to both former and current colleagues who might benefit from participation. (11/30/09)

New Online Publication on Best Practices in Cataloging Exhibition Publications

Cataloging Exhibition Publications: Best Practices: SUBJECTS was written and compiled by Lynda Bunting, Sherman Clarke, Marly Helm, S. Isidor Justeson, Elizabeth Lilker, Elizabeth O'Keefe, Sarah Quimby, Daniel Starr, Lori Van Deman. This new Online Publication provides invaluable insights into cataloging subject heading fields for exhibition catalogs--illuminating the particular issues and challenges associated with these 6xx fields, including meeting names, named works of art, and the use of genre terms. This publication of best practices, created by the ARLIS/NA Cataloging Advisory Committee is devoted to providing practical guidance to catalogers working with art exhibition publications. These guidelines are intended to be used in conjunction with other cataloging documentation, including Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules 2nd edition, 2002 revision (AACR2), and its successor, Resource Description and Access (RDA), Library of Congress Rule Interpretations (LCRI), and MARC21. The cataloging of exhibition publications poses unique challenges to new and experienced catalogers alike. These types of publications often require more use of a cataloger's judgment, and more intervention in terms of transposing, omitting, and supplying data. Decision-making about the choice of a primary access point can be quite involved, and local practices and guidelines greatly affect how an exhibition publication is cataloged. This new online publication is the third devoted to providing best practice guidelines for cataloging exhibition catalogs. The first two in the series are:

From the President

August 12 2010:

Dear Members,

The weather was beautiful in Minneapolis the day I arrived on July 28 to attend the joint VRA & ARLIS/NA Conference Planning Advisory Committee meetings. These meetings were held to plan the 2nd Joint VRA & ARLIS/NA Conference to be held in Minneapolis, Minnesota on March 24-28, 2011. Representatives from both organization's executive boards and Chris Roper, ARLIS/NA association and conference manager, met with the local Twin Cities conference planning group. There was a positive spirit of collaboration evident throughout our gatherings. This is reflective of the joint conference theme "Collaboration: Building Bridges in the 21st Century."

    Art Museum Libraries Survey
The Museum Division invites you to complete the Art Museum Libraries Survey. The survey was developed as a special project of the Museum Division. It consists of 127 questions (not all of which are required) and takes approximately 60 to 90 minutes to complete.

It is suggested that you take the time to examine the survey questions before you begin to answer questions, as some may require input from more than one staff member. Also, have a few documents at hand such as your institution's and/or library's annual report which might be helpful in completing the survey.

The survey will close on Wednesday, March 17, 2010. For more information about the Art Museum Libraries Survey or to ask questions, please email. (2/15/10)

Round Table News

  • Women and Art Round Table

The Women and Art Round Table Wikipedia Project
Several members of the Women and Art Roundtable (WomART) have noticed that coverage of the history of women's art in Wikipedia is poor. Major artists do not have entries, and entries that do exist need editing and additional bibliographic citations to make them more viable. Despite the recent uproar in some academic libraries over the validity of Wikipedia as a research tool, it is widely used by researchers from a variety of backgrounds. Wikipedia is the ninth most widely used Web site in the world, and receives more hits than CNN on a daily basis in the United States.

WomART members have decided to "join them," rather than "beat them," by adding authentic content to the database. To this end, several members of WomART have agreed to either create or edit at least three entries in Wikipedia this year. Instead of building static bibliographies on the history of women's art, we will create hyperlinked, dynamic content. This is a small attempt on our part to push content out beyond the barriers of the art library, to engage a larger audience, and to raise awareness during this important year in women's art. We will present our findings at ARLIS/NA's 2008 annual conference. We encourage other members of ARLIS/NA to take up the cause, seek out entries on art topics, and contribute! At the present time, the Wikipedia entry for ARLIS/NA needs additional content. Alternately, there are no entries for "Art Libraries" or "Art Librarianship."
