ARLIS/NA Members Invited to Arbeitsgemeinschaft der Kunst- und Museumsbibliotheken Colloquium

Deborah Kempe, ARLIS/NA President, Will Receive Award at Colloquium

ARLIS/NA has received an invitation from Evelin Morgenstern, the managing director of Initiative Fortbildung für wissenschaftliche Spezialbibliotheken und verwandte Einrichtungen e.V. (Initiative for Continuing Education in Academic and Research-Oriented Special Libraries and Related Institutions), Zentral- und Landesbibliothek Berlin, to an upcoming colloquium that will take place at the Kunstbibliothek -Staatliche Museen zu Berlin on June 13 and 14, 2013. Several ARLIS/NA members will be featured speakers at the colloquium, "From Wunderkammer to e-Resource: Promoting Art Information Across Borders in the 21st Century". The colloquium, sponsored by BID (Bibliothek & Information International), Initiative Fortbildung für wiss. Spezial-bibliotheken u. verwandte Einrichtungen e.V., Checkpoint Charlie Foundation, and the Arbeitsgemeinschaft der Kunst- und Museumsbibliotheken (AKMB)--an ARLIS/NA affiliate organization--is the result of ongoing communication and cooperation that took place following the successful exchanges between German and American art libraries through ARLIS/NA-sponsored study tours in Germany and the United States. Twelve colleagues in U.S. libraries that hosted German visitors in 2012 have been invited to the colloquium and to a five-day visit to libraries in Berlin and the surrounding region. The twelve ARLIS/NA members invited to Germany are: Stephen Bury, Holly Hatheway, Milan Hughston, Deirdre Lawrence, Katie Keller, Debbie Kempe, Clayton Kirking, Gregory P.J. Most, Lily Pregill, Kristen Regina, Shalimar Fojas White, and Carolyn Yorke Yerkes.

Additionally, Deborah Kempe, chief, Collections Management and Access, Frick Art Reference Library, and the current ARLIS/NA president, will receive the 2013 John Jacob Astor Award in Library Studies and Information Science during the colloquium. The award will be given to Ms. Kempe at a ceremony on Thursday, June 13, 6:30 p.m., at the "BelEtage Heyn", Museum Pankow.

ARLIS/NA members are invited to attend the colloquium that will bring together experts in both countries to engage in discussion about issues that art librarians on both continents are facing. To register, please contact Evelin Morgenstern by May 31st. The invitation from Evelin Morgenstern is included here:

To our colleagues in ARLIS/NA and the AKMB:

Some of you may already be aware of the genesis of this colloquium: Until now, the John Jacob Astor Award recipients have been invited to express their gratitude by giving a workshop in their own special field of librarianship. This year's recipient, Deborah Kempe, has decided to go much further.

She will, escorted by a handful of distinguished colleagues, come to Berlin and all of them--together with their German "counterparts"--are going to talk to us and initiate discussion, during a two-day American-German colloquium, about the issues currently faced by art and museum librarians on both sides of the Atlantic.

In 2012, an invitation from ARLIS/NA to participate in a study tour to New York and Washington--a-once-in-a-life-time-experience--had necessarily to be addressed to just a small group of German professionals from the arts and museums scene.

This year's colloquium, by contrast, offers everyone of you, American or German, an opportunity to take part. You will all be able to learn first-hand about the focus topics during last year's legendary study tour and share the inspiration of peer-to-peer discussions. In other words, you will be given a taste of that professional exchange which in recent years has proved so valuable.

The Arbeitsgemeinschaft der Kunst- und Museumsbibliotheken (AKMB) has taken its commitment to the colloquium to heart and is going to provide not just competent German presenters, but very much more.

The joint efforts of all of the sponsors have made it possible for the Checkpoint Charlie Foundation and the Initiative Fortbildung e.V. to extend warm invitations to American and German colleagues to participate in this colloquium free of charge! We hope that a large number of you will seize this unique opportunity to be part of such an innovative event and look forward to welcoming you to Berlin.

ARLIS/NA and VRA Announce Joint Conference Task Force

The executive boards of ARLIS/NA and the Visual Resources Association (VRA) have established a Joint Conference Task Force that will analyze past joint conference reports, highlight problem areas, define roles and expectations, and propose a protocol for joint conference planning (with the exceptions of financial issues). The report submitted by the task force will facilitate joint conference planning once it is ratified by both boards. The organizations have held two joint conferences in the past; the first joint conference was held in 2002 in St. Louis, Missouri, and the second joint conference was held in 2011 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The establishment of the Joint Conference Task Force is a result of discussions between the ARLIS/NA and VRA boards aimed at laying the groundwork for future joint conferences. The conference financial and operational infrastructures that exist for each organization were shared and analyzed by both boards. Out of these open and collegial discussions, a formal agreement, the Joint Conference Financial Agreement, was reached that outlines the financial terms of joint conferences, including a distribution model for sharing profits and losses. This document, which was ratified by both boards in the fall of 2012, capitalizes on the lessons learned from past joint conferences and the ongoing collaborative track record of our two organizations.

The members of the Joint Conference Task Force with representation from both organizations is as follows.

Ann Whiteside, Harvard University (chair)
Greta Bahnemann, Minnesota Digital Library
Elaine Paul, University of Colorado, Boulder
Mark Pompelia, Rhode Island School of Design
Elizabeth Schaub, University of Texas at Austin

Supporting Creativity in Practice Special Interest Group Formed

The ARLIS/NA executive board has announced the approval of the Supporting Creativity in Practice (SCIP) Special Interest Group. Members of SCIP will explore how creativity applies to the work of art information professionals and how creative engagement can move the library beyond its traditional roles. The group will act as an ongoing support community for personal creative practice by exploring ways to make time in the workday for nurturing creativity, examining how personal artistic practices enhance work as information professionals, and learning effective ways to foster creativity in others. The group will also explore the idea of the library as an incubator of creative discovery by looking at ways to incorporate creatively charged workshops, exhibitions and events into library spaces giving library users opportunities for research and a means to practice hands-on engagement with ideas and knowledge. Members of SCIP may also plan events such as ARLIS/NA-member art exhibits, workshops (possibly tapping local creative talent) and conference sessions.

Creative people of all persuasions and the creatively-curious are encouraged to join the SCIP SIG which will be headed by Annette Haines. The first meeting of the SCIP Special Interest Group will held on Friday, April 26, at the 41st annual conference in Pasadena. (3/4/13)

Provenance Special Interest Group

The ARLIS/NA executive board has approved the new Provenance Special Interest Group (SIG). The Provenance SIG has been established mainly to keep art librarians aware of current issues and activities related to provenance research. It will also act as a forum for provenance-related projects, including participation in future ARLIS/NA sessions and workshops. While the main focus will be provenance research as it relates to Nazi-looted cultural objects, the group will also be open to discussing provenance in a broader context, including its application to the history of books. The inaugural meeting of the group, which will be headed by Philip Dombrowsky, will take place at the upcoming 41st annual conference in Pasadena. (3/4/13)

ARLIS/NA Receives Getty Foundation Grant

ARLIS/NA is the recipient of a $69,000 grant from the Getty Foundation that will provide funds for up to fifteen art librarians from Latin America to attend the 41st Annual Conference in Pasadena, California, in April 2013. Deborah Kempe, ARLIS/NA president, led the successful grant-writing effort that will ultimately fulfill one of the society's strategic plan's goals of "creating stronger leadership through promotion, cooperation and advocacy by building stronger partnerships internationally."

The grant will support selected colleagues in Latin America who could not attend the conference without financial assistance, by covering all costs associated with conference attendance, including registration fees for programs and tours, travel and accommodation, and translation services. The ARLIS/NA executive board and the International Relations Committee will also offer a welcome dinner and reception packet for the special guests. It is expected that the participation of the Latin American colleagues will lead to lasting professional collaborations and friendships, and will significantly expand ARLIS/NA's representation of arts information professionals in the Americas.

A panel of specialists with experience and contacts in the Latin American community has been assembled to select participants who possess proven records of professional accomplishment and collaboration. The panel consists of Beverly Joy-Karno, owner of Howard Karno Books, a distributor of books from Latin America; Clayton Kirking, chief of the Art & Architecture Collection, New York Public Library, curator, and co-author of exhibition catalogs for Latin American art; Milan R. Hughston, chief of Library and Museum Archives at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, where he participates in a special program to build Latin American holdings; Holly Hatheway, art and architecture librarian, Robert B. Haas Family Arts Library, Yale University, and chair of the ARLIS/NA International Relations Committee; Fernando Corona, library director at Museo Nacional de Arte in Mexico City, and coordinator of ReBAM; Guadalupe Rodriguez, the ARLIS/NA association manager, and Jon Evans, library director at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston and the past president of ARLIS/NA.

This year's conference program offers many sessions, tours, speakers, and events that will be of interest to librarians and scholars who work with Latin American influenced subjects. These include the opening plenary panel discussion, "Pacific Standard Time: Art in L.A. 1945-1980", and a plenary presentation by professor Chon Noriega, head of Chicano Studies at UCLA, made possible by Alternative Voices funding. Additional highlights will be a Society Circle event at a significant private collection of Latin American art, and a separate tour to the Avila Adobe on Olvera Street, followed by a viewing of the newly restored América Tropical, located at El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument, the only U.S. public mural by famed Mexican artist David Alfaro Siqueiros still in its original location.

All ARLIS/NA members will benefit from the cultural exchange and expanded opportunities for collaboration offered by the participation of Latin American colleagues. More information on the librarians selected for the program will be forthcoming. ARLIS/NA looks forward to welcoming its fellow arts information professionals from Latin America in Pasadena. New Version of Strategic Plan Action Plan

The Strategic Planning Committee (SPC) has developed a new version of the Strategic Plan and Action Plan for 2011-2015. It has been revised to be easier to read and easier to identify primary agents associated with each of the action items.

Over the summer, the committee has been in touch with all committee chairs, reminding them of their primary agent roles while encouraging other groups within the organization to get involved. If anyone, regardless of their level of participation in ARLIS, is engaged in work or projects that align with the Strategic Plan, contact the SPC about your work.

Questions or comments about the SPC, the plan, or anything else related to the committee's charge, are encouraged and can be directed to Hannah Bennett, chair of the SPC. (10/26/12)

Executive Board Approves Digital Humanities Special Interest Group

The ARLIS/NA executive board has approved a new Special Interest Group (SIG) on digital humanities. The purpose of the Digital Humanities SIG will be to provide interested members the opportunity to engage in discussion, create an online reading group, develop an expanding bibliography, and perhaps periodically sponsor a session at the annual conference about digital humanities.

For their inspiration, the small working group that initiated the Digital Humanities SIG used the definition of Digital Humanities published in "The Promise of Digital Humanities: A White Paper", (March 1, 2009), co-authored by Todd Presner and Chris Johanson , professors at UCLA:

Digital Humanities is an umbrella term for a wide array of practices for creating, applying, and interpreting new digital and information technologies. These practices are not limited to conventional humanities departments, but affect every humanistic field at the university including history, anthropology, arts and architecture, information studies, film and media studies, archaeology, geography, and the social sciences. At the same time, Digital Humanities is a natural outgrowth and expansion of the traditional scope of the Humanities, not a replacement or rejection of humanistic inquiry. In fact the role of the humanist is critical at this historic moment, as our cultural legacy migrates to digital formats and our relation to knowledge, cultural material, technology, and society is radically re-conceptualized.

John Taormina will serve as the first coordinator of the SIG.

From the President

    2 May 2013

    Dear Members and Friends,

For those of us involved in planning and implementing our 41st Annual Conference in Pasadena, it has been incredibly gratifying to receive the positive feedback about your experiences there. Thank you for attending. I hope that each of you who attended will retain special memories of your time in California and have returned to your workplaces full of energy and new ideas for crafting your future. The credit for the resounding success of the conference is due to the flawless work of the conference planning team and many volunteers from the Southern California Chapter and beyond. Together, they produced a seamless event that offered timely content, new channels of communication, uniquely crafted tours, elegant events, and ample opportunities for networking. Truly, it was a superb event that met the highest standards and expectations of all involved.

Read the entire message from Deborah Kempe, past president, ARLIS/NA.

    April 2013

    Dear fellow ARLIS/NA Members,

It seems hard to believe that our 41st Annual Conference in Pasadena will take place in less than ten days. While intensive behind-the-scenes planning has been going on for more than a year, the Conference Planning Committee, in coordination with Headquarters staff, many committees, and a highly effective local team, is now in high gear to ensure success on every level and to welcome you to Pasadena. I know those of us east of California, where spring has been loathe to show its face, are more than looking forward to some sunshine.

Read the entire message from Deborah Kempe, president, ARLIS/NA.

    17 June 2012

    Dear ARLIS/NA Members,

Can it really be possible that two and a half months have elapsed since we met in Toronto? While it's a cliché to marvel at the fleeting nature of time, I think I can confidently assume that for all of us the dizzying pace of technology and e-communications in the library world makes our days pass too quickly. Now, paradoxically, the longest day of the year, Summer Solstice, looms as an ancient reminder of time's passage. Those of you in academic surroundings are catching your breathing at the end of the semester, while all of us are no doubt making plans for summer projects at work, and hopefully for some leisure time in the months ahead. Some great developments have transpired at ARLIS/NA since I was last in contact; I want to share them with you, to bring you up to date with our progress.

Read the entire message from Deborah Kempe, president, ARLIS/NA.

    4 May 2012

A video message from President Deborah Kempe:

    10 April 2012

    Dear members of ARLIS/NA,

It was wonderful to see so many of you in Toronto at our 40th annual conference. I heartily concur with our past president Jon Evans' report last week that the conference was a stellar event on every level. The success of the conference reflects the dedicated work of numerous people throughout a year or more of planning and execution. Many volunteers from throughout the organization created an outstanding conference planning team who worked tirelessly to produce an event meeting the high standards our members have come to expect.

If you are willing to share your story about what ARLIS/NA membership means to you, please consider sending us a paragraph or two. Statements can be e-mailed to Janine Henri. Statements are posted on the ARLIS/NA Web page in the "What Our Members Are Saying" section. Sharing the statements with others will serve to attract new members as well as to highlight current membership diversity and variety in our work settings. Thank you in advance for participating in this outreach effort!

    New Professional Development Committee Website

The Professional Development Committee (PDC) has moved their Web site content to the ARLIS/NA Web site. The committee's pages on the site include information about the committee and its activities. Easy-to-use navigation links will lead you to information about important PDC initiatives such as the year-long Mentoring Program, the Core Competencies, and the Internship Roster. There are also many links to continuing education and employment information for art information professionals under the Professional Resources tab. (03/03/08)

  • The Professional Development Committee's Internship Roster lists a variety of institutions from across North America that host internships. There are listings from internships in museum libraries, visual resource collections, and academic settings. Some of the internships are paid and some are unpaid. If you don't see your institution listed on the roster, please consider submitting the information on the Internship Roster Form. (10/02/07)

Other upcoming initiatives include canvassing ARLIS/NA membership for standards which may need to be created or reviewed; setting up a system to review, and update as necessary, the Digital Image Database Standards Checklist; reviewing and updating the Standards Committee Web page; and preparing for the transition to a new committee chair in 2009. Art Museum Libraries Survey
The Museum Division invites you to complete the Art Museum Libraries Survey. The survey was developed as a special project of the Museum Division. It consists of 127 questions (not all of which are required) and takes approximately 60 to 90 minutes to complete.

It is suggested that you take the time to examine the survey questions before you begin to answer questions, as some may require input from more than one staff member. Also, have a few documents at hand such as your institution's and/or library's annual report which might be helpful in completing the survey.

The survey will close on Wednesday, March 17, 2010. For more information about the Art Museum Libraries Survey or to ask questions, please email. (2/15/10)

Round Table News

  • Women and Art Round Table

The Women and Art Round Table Wikipedia Project
Several members of the Women and Art Roundtable (WomART) have noticed that coverage of the history of women's art in Wikipedia is poor. Major artists do not have entries, and entries that do exist need editing and additional bibliographic citations to make them more viable. Despite the recent uproar in some academic libraries over the validity of Wikipedia as a research tool, it is widely used by researchers from a variety of backgrounds. Wikipedia is the ninth most widely used Web site in the world, and receives more hits than CNN on a daily basis in the United States.

WomART members have decided to "join them," rather than "beat them," by adding authentic content to the database. To this end, several members of WomART have agreed to either create or edit at least three entries in Wikipedia this year. Instead of building static bibliographies on the history of women's art, we will create hyperlinked, dynamic content. This is a small attempt on our part to push content out beyond the barriers of the art library, to engage a larger audience, and to raise awareness during this important year in women's art. We will present our findings at ARLIS/NA's 2008 annual conference. We encourage other members of ARLIS/NA to take up the cause, seek out entries on art topics, and contribute! At the present time, the Wikipedia entry for ARLIS/NA needs additional content. Alternately, there are no entries for "Art Libraries" or "Art Librarianship."
