ARLIS/NA Seeking an ARLIS/NA Reviews Editor

The executive board invites applications for the position of ARLIS/NA Reviews Editor. Joan Stahl, who has held the position starting with the winter 1992 issue of Art Documentation, is stepping down this year.

ARLIS/NA Reviews, an online feature available on the society's Web site, provides insightful evaluations of new and recent publications in a wide range of topics in art, design, architecture, and related fields, with particular emphasis on scholarly, professional, and reference publications.

The ARLIS/NA Reviews Editor is appointed by the president for a two-year, renewable, term. The incumbent works with the ARLIS/NA Web site editor and participates on the Communications & Publications Committee. The reviews editor is responsible for all content posted to the reviews feature on the ARLIS/NA Web site. The editor works closely with publishers, reviewers and the society's Web site editor to establish a posting timetable and determine feature content.

Major responsibilities include preparing reviewer guidelines, soliciting review copies from publishers, assigning reviews and mailing titles to reviewers, collecting signed publication agreements from reviewers, obtaining "cover art" image files from publishers for reviewed titles, editing all reviews, preparing "Books Received" bibliography, and formatting all reviews and submiting them in required format to the Web site editor.

Members with proven editorial experience, knowledge of research methods and documentation of art history, and familiarity with art publishing and resources are encouraged to submit a letter of interest and resume (electronic format preferred) to Roger Lawson, chair of the Communications and Publications Committee, by May 1, 2009. Any inquiries about the position may also be directed to Roger Lawson.

An evaluation subcommittee consisting of the chair of the Communications and Publications Committee, ARLIS/NA appointed editors, and a representative from the Reference and Information Services Section will review applications. Candidates who submit resumes by April 15 and plan to attend the annual conference in Indianapolis will be invited to meet with a member of the subcommittee for an interview, but all qualified applicants will be given full consideration. The subcommittee will make a recommendation to the executive board for appointment no later than May 15, 2009. (4/2/09)

2008-2009 Internship Award Recipient Selected

Adrienne Lai is the 2008-2009 recipient of the ARLIS/NA Internship Award. Lai is a candidate for Joint Master of Archival Studies and Library and Information Studies graduate degrees at the University of British Columbia. She holds a BFA from the Emily Carr Institute of Art + Design in Vancouver, B.C. and a MFA from the University of California, Irvine. She currently serves as events coordinator and communications director for the Special Library Association's student chapter at the University of British Columbia. Ms. Lai is on a career trajectory for employment in an academic art library or visual resources collection. (3/19/09)

Judith Hoffberg (May 19, 1934-January 16, 2009)

ARLIS/NA mourns the passing of Judith Hoffberg, May 19, 1934-January 16, 2008. Ms. Hoffberg was a co-founder of ARLIS/NA and served as the society's first chairman in 1973 and as executive secretary from 1974 to 1977. She also edited the ARLIS/NA newsletter from 1972 to 1977. An interview of Ms. Hoffberg about the early years of ARLIS/NA was published in the Spring 2008, v.27, no.1, issue of Art Documentation.

In 1978 Ms. Hoffberg founded Umbrella Associates and began issuing Umbrella, a newsletter about artists' books and publications that had a transformational impact in the field.

Ms. Hoffberg's many accomplishments and the founding role she played in ARLIS/NA will be celebrated at the membership meeting at the 37th Annual Conference in Indianapolis. (1/29/09)

New Online Publication on Best Practices in Cataloging

Cataloging Exhibition Publications: Best Practices: NOTES, authored by the Cataloging Advisory Committee, provides invaluable recommendations for cataloging the "Notes" fields in records for exhibition catalogs--illuminating all the particular issues and challenges associated with these 5xx fields.

The best practices publications are devoted to providing practical guidance to catalogers working with art exhibition publications. These guidelines are intended to be used in conjunction with other cataloging documentation, including Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules 2nd edition, 2002 revision (AACR2), and its successor, Resource Description and Access (RDA), Library of Congress Rule Interpretations (LCRI), and MARC21.

This first cataloging best practices publication is devoted to the title and statement of responsibility fields of the MARC record. Online publications are available free of charge on the ARLIS/NA Web site. (1/16/09)

Changes to Art Documentation

Kathy Zimon will be stepping down as contents co-editor of Art Documentation with the Fall 2008 issue. During her seven-year tenure, Kathy was dedicated to making Art Documentation the valuable professional resource that it is today. As the publication moves forward, Judy Dyki will continue as content editor and Eileen Markson will continue as copy editor.

Beginning in 2009, Art Documentation will become a peer-reviewed publication. A recent membership survey indicated that this is an important consideration for many potential authors when submitting articles for publication; it will also enhance the overall quality of the journal. The editors will collaborate with members of the Communications and Publications Committee to develop a new review process, contributor guidelines, and production schedule which will be in place for the Fall 2009 issue. The Spring 2009 issue will use a modified peer review process during the transition. (11/12/08)

From the President

April 28 2009:

Happy New (ARLIS/NA) Year!

This month we celebrated our 37th annual conference in Indianapolis, Indiana. We all owe a big thanks to the Indianapolis conference crew. Everyone did a fabulous job, and even managed to provide us with decent weather. A number of us ventured out on what we hope will become a new ARLIS/NA conference tradition--a minor league baseball game. It's hard to find that much fun for so little money anywhere else, believe me.

Division News

  • Art & Design School Division

    New Blog
There is some very exciting news for our division. Many of us have been waiting a long time for this, but at long last, thanks to the efforts of our co-moderators, Claudia Covert and Laura Haxon, we now have an Art and Design School Library Division blog. Although up and running, the blog is still a work in progress, undergoing some final tweaking. It is hoped that the blog will be accessible through the ARLIS/NA homepage in the near future. Please take a few minutes to look at the blog--it's going to be a wonderful source of ongoing dialogue and more. Let your voices be heard! Thank you Claudia and Laura! (4/24/08)

    Member Success Story
In a recent posting to ARLIS-L, I had asked if any Division members had a success story to share. I received a response from Jill Luedke, reference/instruction librarian at the Adam & Sophie Gimbel Design Library at Parsons, The New School for Design, which I think might be of interest to several of our division members. Enticing students to come into the library and use our resources seems to be an ever growing challenge. Jill and one of her colleagues have initiated a fun and creative way to highlight their collection and draw people in using a simple but effective tool--a button making machine. The colorful graphic imagery is created from one inch snippets taken from color photocopies made from books in the collection. The button project was started a year ago, initially as a promotional tool for Fall orientations for students and faculty. It quickly became a huge hit, with now "collectible" status. Following this success, the buttons are now being used as instructional tools and incentives for students to actively participate in library instruction sessions (those who contribute in discussions or brainstorming are rewarded with a button). The buttons have also been used effectively as a way to help summer English as a Second Language students understand call numbers and navigate the collection. Each student was given a "button card" on which was written a citation, call number, and brief description of a book in the collection. Attached to the card was a button with an image taken from the individual book to be searched and found which the students kept as their reward. The books selected were all related to the student's course work or final projects, and thus had relevance beyond the basic lesson of how to find material on the shelves. It seems as though the buttons have endless potential. Looking at the image Jill sent me of a table filled with colorful buttons, I can easily see why these are collectibles...I would have a very hard time choosing among them! What a perfect reward for an art and design oriented user and a clever way to entice people to come back and explore. (4/24/08)

Round Table News

  • Women and Art Round Table

The Women and Art Round Table Wikipedia Project
Several members of the Women and Art Roundtable (WomART) have noticed that coverage of the history of women's art in Wikipedia is poor. Major artists do not have entries, and entries that do exist need editing and additional bibliographic citations to make them more viable. Despite the recent uproar in some academic libraries over the validity of Wikipedia as a research tool, it is widely used by researchers from a variety of backgrounds. Wikipedia is the ninth most widely used Web site in the world, and receives more hits than CNN on a daily basis in the United States.

WomART members have decided to "join them," rather than "beat them," by adding authentic content to the database. To this end, several members of WomART have agreed to either create or edit at least three entries in Wikipedia this year. Instead of building static bibliographies on the history of women's art, we will create hyperlinked, dynamic content. This is a small attempt on our part to push content out beyond the barriers of the art library, to engage a larger audience, and to raise awareness during this important year in women's art. We will present our findings at ARLIS/NA's 2008 annual conference. We encourage other members of ARLIS/NA to take up the cause, seek out entries on art topics, and contribute! At the present time, the Wikipedia entry for ARLIS/NA needs additional content. Alternately, there are no entries for "Art Libraries" or "Art Librarianship."
